Getting to Know Kids Church Teacher Mindy Gatchell

How long have you been a teacher? What ages/subjects have you taught?

STAFF BlogI’ve taught 22 years and ages kindergarten, 2nd, 3rd, 6th (Math), and Middle and High School English.

What’s the most rewarding part of being a teacher?

Investing in the lives of whole families, not only the kids. It’s great to help parents in raising their kids, helping them spiritually or even academically (One time I taught a parent of one of my third graders grammar).

What makes PCI Kids Church so special?

Teachers really care about the children and families, they make it fun, and it goes beyond the Bible stories into the heart of God, who He is and His love through Christ.

What’s one valuable memory you have from teaching PCI Kids Church?

I really enjoy working with a young man named Jacob. Even though he has some physical disabilities, he really has the heart of a Christian- to give to and serve others. Although he may not be able to do certain things, he helps with the lights, computer, paper passing, and most importantly, shares his bright smile and abundance of joy. He is such a blessing to me and the kids and he really knows his Bible!

Who’s your favorite person in the Bible and why?

I don’t think I have one favorite person, but I love reading through the whole Bible. It shows the big picture of God’s heart, so much so that I usually cry as I read through it because God’s been treated so horribly. Right now I like the story of Gideon, which shows me that God doesn’t give up and still intervenes in our lives.

How can you encourage or advise parents who are training up their children in the Lord?

Parenting is not a checklist. It’s not about being able to say about raising my kids, “I did this” or “I won’t…” like making a list of standards I want to meet according to my own experience growing up.  No one can guarantee the kids will turn out the way he or she wants. It’s better to walk by faith, trust God, and allow him to move in the hearts of my kids. Many look forward to having grand kids, but I recognize it as having more people to hand over and entrust to God, which is a challenge!

What’s something God’s been teaching you recently in your walk with Him?

Submitting to authority and how God has used this in my life. He’s teaching me the importance of being an amazing follower, wife, and employee in order to support, help, encourage, believe in my leaders, and consider their perspectives. And they often reciprocate! In my pride and independence I often want to make all my own decisions, but I’m realizing a follower can have a bigger impact than a leader at times.

What’s your favorite way to relax or unwind?

I like to walk or swim or go out to eat. Houston’s has great salads, Kimmy’s in Orange is great for breakfast, and Strawberry Farms Golf Course is great because it’s like eating out in the country.

What’s your favorite snack to indulge?

A coffee milkshake from Hans.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I edited a nonfiction book once; it was a New York Times bestseller. But the process was tedious and painstaking- never again!
