Parents Who Model Coping Skills To Kids

Recently I was reading about demonstrating or modeling coping skills to help the children in my life.  Sadly, anxiety and depression are reported to be on the rise among America’s children and preteens.  Click here https://www.pacificchurch.comJun17.pdf to read this article in full in the Parenting Christian Kids newsletter at Pacific Church of Irvine’s website.  Jesus has been trying to teach me since I was a little girl – Matthew 6: 25-34 “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life-whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear.  Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing?…So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries.  Today’s trouble is enough for today.”

To trust Jesus at His word is my part.  To rely on His promises, I need to know what they are.  To know His promises and remember them I read from the Bible or a devotional and listen to positive music daily.

Identifying feelings; using words that describe feelings positive and negative ones help me identify what I am feeling or thinking.  Then I will use these very words in prayer to Jesus to help me cope with and overcome or live with the feeling.  I must trust Him above all else.  He is the who and what I would like to hold on to for hope and deliverance out of my trouble.  I trust Him to also help and give hope to my child, or anyone who I can pray with in times of anxiety and fear.  Depression is something that may need a doctor’s care and is not something to take lightly.  Yet even in a doctor’s care we need to pray and remember Jesus’ promises and trust Him to do what He promises.  This sounds simple but it takes practice.
