July 4, Independence Day

For 25 years I have led about 120 2nd graders in a patriotic program. The kids learn and sing 10 patriotic songs, and I teach them the stories behind the songs.

After our show two years ago I wrote this poem.

REFLECTIONS AFTER THE SECOND GRADE PATRIOTIC PROGRAM

November 8, 2018

One hundred and twenty second graders did sing,

Songs of America, O Land, let freedom ring!

The Mayflower Compact. Thirteen colonies swore

And claimed “Independence!” Washington won the war!

The Constitution signed, nothing like it before.

Checks and balances made, the rule of law therefore.

Separation of pow’rs, enumerated rights,

Government from people, liberty climbs new heights!

The War of 1812, the White House did fire flair.

Ft. McHenry attacked, but the flag was still there!

The Civil War, costly, six hundred thousand men,

The union was preserved, slavery met its end.
